Junior Math Olympiad

Does your child love math, problem-solving, competing, and being part of a team? Then become a mathlete and join the Math Olympiad team! Math Olympiad will push and challenge your child while also participating in fun math challenges and competitions.

Your school’s Math Olympiad Team is an in-person, after-school math competition team for students in 4th through 6th grade. Training sessions will be held in-person, one day per week from 3:00pm.-4:00 p.m. on your school campus. This program will last from September to May. Students on the Math Olympiad Team will have the opportunity to participate in up to three math competitions, including MOEMS, Mathzilla!, and Math Field Day.

This year we have space for a maximum of 30 students per team. If your child is interested, please complete the interest list by Friday, September 6, 2024. Once the Interest List closes on September 6th, students will be placed on teams based on district-wide criteria (see below). Interest List sign-up does not guarantee a place on the team. Based on the number of students interested, a waitlist may be formed. Once teams have been formed, students and parents will be notified  with instructions for how to register and process donations. Class will start the week of September 23rd, 2024 , pending final decisions regarding our teacher coach team.

Every student is welcome to express interest in one of the 30 spots on the team! Team selections are prioritized in the following way:

  • Participation in the LCUSD GATE program
  • 2023-2024 mathematics CAASPP scores for 4th- 6th graders
  • 2023-2024  mathematics grades for 4th-6th graders
  • Any interested student below a minimum score of “Met Standard” on the CAASPP (4th-6th grade) or a minimum grade of “B” in both graded trimesters on their 2023-2024 report card (4th and 5th grade) is not guaranteed a spot on a Math Olympiad team, even if the class roster isn’t full.

Please note that Math Olympiad is not a math remediation course or a child-care option. Although this is a recreational after-school activity, Math Olympiad will be an enjoyable experience for students who possess strong math skills and enthusiasm for problem-solving. For those who secure a spot on the team, we ask for a donation of $300 for the season (September to May). This donation covers the cost of the program including teacher compensation (preparation and instruction), MOEMS program fees, snacks, and awards. Donations are non-refundable once Math Olympiad season starts.
