Math Olympiad
Dear 4th-6th grade PCY families,
Does your child enjoy math, problem-solving, competition, and being part of a team? Then they may be a perfect fit for the Math Olympiad Team! Math Olympiad challenges students with exciting problem-solving opportunities while building teamwork and critical thinking skills.
The Math Olympiad program is an in-person, after-school program for students in 4th through 6th grade. Practices will be held once a week from 3:00–4:00 p.m, beginning the week of September 22nd and continuing through May 2026. The day your child’s class will be taught can be found on the interest form. Students will train for and compete in up to three math competitions: MOEMS, Mathzilla!, and Math Field Day.
This year, space is limited to 30 students per team. To be considered, please complete the Interest List by Friday, September 5th. After the Interest List closes, teams will be formed based on district-wide criteria (see below). Signing up for the Interest List does not guarantee a spot; if more students apply than space allows, a waitlist may be created. Families of selected students will receive instructions for registration at that time.
Team Selection Criteria:
- Participation in the LCUSD GATE program
- 2024–2025 CAASPP mathematics scores
- 2024–2025 mathematics grades
Please note: Students must demonstrate strong math skills to benefit from this program. Any student with scores below “Met Standard” on the CAASPP (grades 4–6) or below a B average in math (grades 4–5) is not guaranteed placement, even if space is available.
Math Olympiad is not a remediation course or child-care program. While it is recreational, it is best suited for students who love math and are eager for challenges.
For those placed on a team, we ask for a $300 donation for the season (September–May). This donation supports teacher preparation and instruction, MOEMS program fees, snacks, and awards. Please note that donations are non-refundable once the season begins.
Important Dates:
- Week of August 25th – Interest List opens
- Friday, September 5th – Interest List closes
- Week of September 22nd – Practices begin
