Math Olympiad
Dear 4th-6th grade families,
Is your child excited by math, loves a good challenge, and enjoys working with others? The Math Olympiad Team could be a great fit! Students will tackle engaging math problems, develop creative problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, and experience the excitement of competing as part of a team.
The Math Olympiad program is an in-person, after-school program for students in 4th through 6th grade. Practices will be held once a week from 3:00–4:00 p.m, beginning the week of September 28th and continuing through May. Students will train for and compete in up to three math competitions: MOEMS, Mathzilla!, and Math Field Day.
This year, space is limited to 30 students per team. To be considered, please complete the Interest List by Friday, September 4th. After the Interest List closes, teams will be formed based on district-wide criteria (see below). Signing up for the Interest List does not guarantee a spot; if more students apply than space allows, a waitlist may be created. Families of selected students will receive instructions for registration at that time.
Team Selection Criteria:
- Participation in the LCUSD GATE program
- 2025–2026 CAASPP mathematics scores
- 2025–2026 mathematics grades
Students must demonstrate strong math skills to benefit from this program. Any student with scores below “Met Standard” on the CAASPP (grades 4–6) or below a B average in math (grades 4–5) is not guaranteed placement, even if space is available. Math Olympiad is not a remediation course or child-care program. While it is recreational, it is best suited for students who love math and are eager for challenges.
If your child is new to the district, please email your child's school principal and the site counselor their CAASPP mathematics scores and grades. If your child did not take the CAASPP, please send the mandated standardized test scores they received in math.
Please note, this is subject to change depending on our ability to fully staff the program. Once coaches are finalized, the schedule will be shared. If your child is selected to join a team, you will receive an email notifying you of their placement and asking you to accept the spot. For those placed on a team, we ask for a $325 donation for the season. This donation supports teacher preparation and instruction, MOEMS program fees, snacks, and awards. Please note that donations are non-refundable once the season begins.
